I think the second approach will let you force a colonists to remove a roof section but i don t think it will generate any tasks to do so automatically. Are you sure you are using the remove roof zone and not just removing the build roof zone there are 4 roof buttons in total. Only way i have seen is in dev mode or by removing the walls below it even the rock walls and it will fall down on top of the ground below. Do not recomend the second option it is slow and well lets just say high odds of people pancakes which are not good if you like those people but it is good for mining xp. So i try to remove the mountain roofs so they don t collapse by declareing a no roof area but on some tiles it will never be possible to declare that area and if i let the roof collapse and remove the debris it just collapses again presumably forever since i tried removing it 15 times and it still collapsed. They will remove it like any other roof.
